The USS Antares, the prototype vessel in its own class, represents a dramatic change in Starfleet's starship design philosophy. Previous designs have been specialized in function: exploration, medical, repair, research, and warfare. Antares is the first of the Federation's vessels designed to successfully fulfill multiple roles; a starship truly meant to travel alone amongst the stars.
Antares has been constructed with the latest in warp theory and design, possessing the newest ramscoops and nacelle configurations, as well as an oversized warp core intended to generate ample power. Similarly, Antares possesses the most recent developments in sensor and shield designs. Outfitted for defense, the vessel is equipped with four Type V phaser banks and two torpedo launchers.
To facilitate the extended operations the vessel's crew is expected to undertake, Antares is luxurious compared to other Federation starships. It is carpeted and appointed with real wood detailing. Individual quarters are assigned to every member of the crew. Additionally, the vessel provides numerous avenues for entertainment and relaxation including three gyms, two swimming pools, hot tubs, a movie theater, and even an extended commisary designed to look like several adjoining shops.
